Elevate your BBQ wine selection with these six interesting new wines.

There's a certain art to pairing wine with a barbecue that goes beyond the usual can of lager or bottle of rosé. Smoke, char and bold seasoning call for wines with enough character to keep up — and this season's new finds do exactly that, spanning crisp whites, structured rosés and juicy reds.

Start with something textural and food-friendly: Kore Grillo from Sicily is a lovely place to begin, its stone-fruit brightness and saline edge making it a natural match for grilled seafood and charred vegetables. For something more unusual, Nivarius Rioja Tempranillo Blanco offers a rare (unoaked) look at white Tempranillo — rich, aromatic and layered enough to stand up to grilled chicken or halloumi.

On the rosé side, both of these being dry, mineral enough to appeal to Provence rose fans but dare I say a bit more interesting! as Astobiza Txakoli Rosé brings a lightly spritzy, saline freshness from the Basque coast, perfect for any seafood, for sipping between courses, while the Kuzubağ Kalicik Karasi Rosé, made from Turkey's characterful Kalicik grape, adds a savoury, food-friendly edge that works beautifully with lamb skewers or spiced marinades.

When it's time for the reds, reach for something with body and depth. Mosaic Red, from Greece, blends indigenous character with real structure, making it a great partner for grilled red meats, while the pure tasting Bull Ant Cabernet Merlot from Lake Breeze, South Australia delivers generous fruity depth, with cool vineyard freshness, with sauve, supple tannin that a proper steak off the coals deserves.
