Friday 21st August. North West Spain. Albarino & Beyond.
Northwest Spain is one of the country's most exciting wine regions, shaped by cool Atlantic air, granite soils, and centuries-old grape varieties found almost nowhere else.
Galicia leads the way with Rías Baixas, famous for crisp, aromatic Albariño that pairs beautifully with the region's seafood, while inland areas like Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra produce lesser-known whites from Treixadura and Godello, alongside elegant, high-acid reds from Mencía grown on dramatic terraced vineyards above the Sil and Miño rivers.
Just along the Bay of Biscay in the Basque Country, Txakoli (or Txakolina) stands apart with its bright, bone-dry, slightly effervescent whites made mainly from the Hondarrabi Zuri grape, traditionally poured from a height to aerate the wine and enhance its natural spritz.
Together these wines reflect the maritime climate of Spain's green, rainy north — lighter, tangier, and more refreshing than the bolder reds of Rioja or the south, and increasingly sought after for their versatility with fish, shellfish, and lighter fare.
The six wines this evening represent these different wine styles of the region.
